Best Minecraft horror mods to play on Fabric in 2026

If you play Minecraft on Fabric and you want something in the world that hunts you, six mods cover most of what the genre does in 2026: From The Fog, the Cave Dweller family, The Man From The Fog, Mimicked, The Stalker Horror and Araz. They are not interchangeable. Each one is built around a single mechanic, and that mechanic decides whether you are still playing on the third night.

Loader support is the first filter, and it removes more mods than people expect. Several of the best known horror mods are Forge or NeoForge only, and several stopped at Minecraft 1.20.1. If you are on a recent Fabric version, the list gets short quickly.

One disclosure before the list. I wrote Araz, so it is in here as a description rather than a review, and it is not placed first. Every claim I make about someone else's mod comes from that mod's own Modrinth project page, which I checked on 22 September 2026.

Which Minecraft horror mods work on Fabric in 2026?

Here are the six side by side. Core mechanic means the one thing the mod is built around, not its full feature list.

From The Fog

From The Fog puts Herobrine in your world and lets him haunt it. Its Modrinth page describes it as bringing the legendary Herobrine to life true to the legend, and the mod works through the world changing behind your back far more than through fighting. It is the largest of the six by downloads, roughly 5.6 million on Modrinth.

It also has the widest version support here. The Modrinth page lists Minecraft 1.19 through 1.21.10 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and it ships as a data pack as well. Pick it if you want long stretches of nothing followed by one detail that is wrong.

Cave Dweller and its forks

Cave Dweller is the mod most of this genre descends from. The idea is plain: while you are mining, something rare spawns out of sight, finds you and sprints. There is no story and no progression. The odds simply get worse the longer you stay underground.

The complication is that it now exists as several separate projects. The Fabric port of Gargin's original covers Minecraft 1.19.2 to 1.20.2 and has around 525,000 Modrinth downloads. Cave Dweller Evolved has a Fabric build for 1.19.4 and 1.20.1 with around 232,000, and the Fabric fork of Cave Dweller Reimagined covers the same two versions with around 46,000. Check which fork a video or guide actually means before you install one.

The Man From The Fog

The Man From The Fog is the active hunter of the group. It comes to where you live, gets in, and its signature mechanic is eye contact: whether you are looking at it changes what it does next. One rule carries the whole mod, and it works.

Version support is where it gets awkward for Fabric players. The main Modrinth project is Forge and stops at Minecraft 1.20.1, with roughly 4.8 million downloads. A separate project, The Man From The Fog - Fabric, covers 1.19 to 1.20.1 with around 590,000. Neither goes past 1.20.1, so on a newer Minecraft you cannot use it.

Mimicked

Mimicked does one thing and does it well. Entities near you replay recordings of real player voices. Its Modrinth page states that the mod cannot function at all unless Simple Voice Chat is installed on both the client and the server, that it uses real recordings rather than generated audio, and that it happens roughly every five minutes per nearby player by default.

It is the best pick on this list for people who play with friends in voice chat, because hearing a friend from a place they are not is the entire effect. It is also Forge and NeoForge only, on 1.19.2, 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, with around 105,000 Modrinth downloads, so Fabric players cannot run it.

The Stalker Horror

The Stalker Horror is the smallest mod here, around 20,000 Modrinth downloads, and also the most focused. Its Modrinth page describes two hunting states: a cautious one that gives up when it loses sight of you, and an aggressive one that keeps coming across distance. It breaks glass and wooden doors, and it uses positional breathing and footsteps so you can hear roughly where it is.

It is Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1 only. If you are already on Forge 1.20.1 and you want a chase mod you can understand in one evening, it is a sensible choice.

Araz (The Anomaly)

Araz is mine, so read this as a description. The creature starts with nothing and unlocks its abilities by watching what you do. Open and close your door often enough and doors stop being an obstacle to it. Walk past your animals without hurting them and it starts taking them. Sleep, and it learns that a body can be left behind. Everything it learns is written into the world save, so it is further along every time you load the world.

It also writes down what it sees, and it shows you. Some nights it plants a sign near your bed with a line from the record it keeps on you. The Observation Log, an item in the abandoned camp chest, tells you how many nights it has watched, how often you have met, and which abilities that unlocked. Underneath all of it is a story: a first sighting, the abandoned camp, five Corrupted Records, a guarded portal ruin, and The Last Line forged at the Altar of Araz.

• Runs on Minecraft 26.3, 26.1.2, 1.21.10 and 1.20.1, Fabric only. There is no Forge or NeoForge build.
• Fabric API and GeckoLib are required. Simple Voice Chat, Mod Menu and Cloth Config are optional.
• Nothing touches world generation. The abandoned camp and the portal ruin are built when you get close, so an existing world is safe.
• Type /araz help and it reads your progress and tells you the next step. /araz altar shows the altar layout.
• Light mode leaves it watching and making sounds with no attacks, jumpscares, executions, possession or abductions, and the story still plays. Photosensitivity mode removes the flashes, glitch bars and pulsing overlays.

The current release is 1.0.0-beta.2, and beta means what it says. Single player is what I test most, multiplayer reports are still thin, and Part II, which is what lies on the other side of that portal, is not out. Which horror mod should I install?

• You want atmosphere and a world that changes behind your back: From The Fog.
• You want caves to be frightening again: a Cave Dweller fork that matches your loader and version.
• You want something that comes to your house and hunts you: The Man From The Fog, on 1.20.1.
• You play with friends in voice chat: Mimicked, on Forge or NeoForge.
• You want a short, direct chase on Forge 1.20.1: The Stalker Horror.
• You want a long run on Fabric where the creature changes because of you: Araz.

What to check before you install any of them

Most of these mods animate a custom creature, which means GeckoLib. Check which GeckoLib version the mod page asks for, because a build made for one Minecraft version will not load on another. Araz on Minecraft 26.3 needs GeckoLib 5.5.6 or newer.

• Match the loader first. Fabric, Forge and NeoForge builds are separate files, and a Forge jar will not load on Fabric.
• Match the Minecraft version exactly. Several mods on this list stop at 1.20.1.
• Install the dependencies the mod page lists. The Fabric port of Cave Dweller asks for GeckoLib and owo-lib. Mimicked asks for Simple Voice Chat on both client and server.
• Back up the save before adding a horror mod to a world you care about.
• Running two stalker mods at once usually makes both of them weaker, because they compete for the same quiet nights.
