In short Araz is a Fabric horror mod for Minecraft 26.3, 26.1.2, 1.21.10 and 1.20.1. During a hunt you can run, stare it down, or crouch still in the dark for three seconds to hide. Part I ends when you read five Corrupted Records, forge The Last Line at the Altar of Araz and use it to kill the creature.

Araz is a Fabric horror mod where the creature learns its abilities by watching what you do, and keeps everything it learned saved with the world. This guide has two halves: getting through a hunt alive, and finishing Part I of the story.

The surviving half is short. When it hunts you there are three options, and each one has something that breaks it. The Part I walkthrough is longer, but the game helps you: type /araz help and it reads your progress and tells you the next step.

Everything here is from the Araz mod page and the mod's own in-game text, for release 1.0.0-beta.2, current as of September 2026. There are builds for Minecraft 26.3, 26.1.2, 1.21.10 and 1.20.1. It is still a beta, so expect rough edges, and Part II is not out.

What are your three options when Araz hunts you?

Running, staring and hiding all work, and all three stop working under the right conditions. The Araz mod page states it plainly: once it knows you well, hiding stops working, and on Blood Moon nights nothing works.

OptionWhat you doWhat breaks it
RunBreak line of sight and keep moving.Every encounter makes it about 4% faster, up to 60% faster. Twenty hours into a world, running is no longer a plan.
Stare it downLook straight at it and do not look away. While you do, it will not close in.The better it knows you, the less your stare holds it back.
HideCrouch, stay still and stay in the dark for three seconds.High familiarity, and any Blood Moon night.

The world going quiet is your early warning

While Araz is within about 28 blocks, animals, ambience and music fall silent on your client. According to the beta.2 changelog this happens before you have seen it. If Minecraft suddenly sounds empty, you are already inside its range.

It leaves other traces. Some nights it plants a sign near your bed with a line from the record it keeps on you, such as "14 TIMES / YOU OPENED IT". Where it kills someone it leaves a skull and a sign reading "ONE WHO WALKED / STOPPED HERE", which your friends will find on a server.

What happens on a Blood Moon night?

Once it has learned enough from you, some nights the sky bleeds. Music stops, every ability it has unlocked is available at once, and it does not hide. Hiding fails, and the appearance cooldown that normally keeps it away for at least four minutes is ignored.

The moon has bled. It is not hiding tonight.

Does a Totem of Undying save you from Araz?

No. At the killing blow it pulls the Totem of Undying out of your hand, blackens it in its palm, shatters it in mid-air and brings both arms down on you. It is a full cinematic, your camera is locked, and a shield does not stop it.

There is exactly one totem in the world it cannot touch. The portal ruin chest holds a totem with the Arazproof enchantment, once per world. It cannot be stolen or broken, and otherwise works like a vanilla totem. The craftable Seal of Araz is a second option: hold it, and it cancels your death once.

Araz Part I walkthrough, step by step

Part I runs from the first sighting to The Last Line. If you lose the thread at any point, type /araz help in chat and it tells you where you are and what to do next, coordinates included.

  1. The first sighting

A few minutes into a new world it shows itself once, in daylight, with no attack. It looks at you for about two seconds and leaves. Nothing else in the mod can appear before this scene has played.

  2. The abandoned camp

Right after the sighting the camp coordinates appear in chat: "You noticed an abandoned camp far away". Write the three numbers down. The camp itself is four bedrolls and zero people.

  3. The camp chest

The chest holds three Corrupted Records and the Observation Log. The log is reusable and always current: it tells you how many nights it watched you, what you did in front of it and which abilities that unlocked.

  4. Read the records

Right-click each Corrupted Record to read it. After the third one the notes describe a place and the coordinates of the portal ruin appear in chat.

  5. The portal ruin

The ruin lies deep underground and it is guarded. Arriving inside it starts a 30-second countdown, then a chase down a corridor built for running. Standing on the surface above it does not count. If it catches you it takes you by the throat and leaves you somewhere far away.

  6. The last records and the Essence

The ruin chest holds the last two Corrupted Records, an Essence of Araz and the Arazproof totem. Read those records and you have all five. More copies also hide in ancient cities, strongholds, mansions, temples and outposts.

  7. Forge The Last Line

Build the Altar of Araz, hold the Essence of Araz and right-click the soul sand or the soul torch. With all five records read, The Last Line is forged. Without them the altar stays silent.

  8. Finish it

Hold The Last Line when it comes. While you hold it Araz cannot flee, and it stops holding back: full health and harder strikes. Kill it and it stays dead until you invite it back at the altar.

How do you build the Altar of Araz?

Seen from above, the altar is three blocks by three: A . A / . S . / A . A, where A is an amethyst block, S is soul sand with a soul torch on top and . is empty.

The four amethyst blocks sit on the diagonals, level with the soul sand. Then right-click the soul sand or the torch with your main hand. What happens depends on what you are holding. Typing /araz altar in game prints the same layout.

What you holdWhat happens
Empty hand, or any other itemYou invite it. It comes more often and hunts harder.
Essence of Araz, with all 5 records readYou forge The Last Line.
Soul lantern, with 3 diamonds in your inventoryThree days of silence. The lantern and the diamonds are consumed.

Which Minecraft versions and mods does Araz need?

As of September 2026, Araz 1.0.0-beta.2 has builds for Minecraft 26.3, 26.1.2, 1.21.10 and 1.20.1. All of them are Fabric. There is no Forge or NeoForge version.

ModNeededWhat it does
Fabric APIRequiredThe base Fabric library the mod is written against.
GeckoLibRequiredThe creature's model and animations. GeckoLib 5.5.6 or newer on Minecraft 26.3.
Simple Voice ChatOptionalVoice mimicry. It replays your own voice, or a friend's, from the dark.
Mod Menu and Cloth ConfigOptionalThe in-game settings screen. Without them every option still lives in config/araz.json.

Nothing in the mod touches world generation, so you can add it to a world you already play. The abandoned camp and the portal ruin are built when you get close to them, not during chunk generation.

What to do when the story gets stuck

Two commands cover almost every case. /araz help reads your saved progress and prints your next step with the coordinates you were given. /araz altar prints the altar layout and its three uses. Both stay in English in every language the mod is translated into.

  • No sighting yet: keep playing in that world. It shows itself once, a few minutes in, and nothing else can appear before that scene.
  • The camp coordinates show only stone: camps already built in beta.1 worlds stay where they are, and if the camp was never built, /araz help gives you the new coordinates.
  • The chase never started: you have to be inside the ruin, not on the surface above it. That was fixed in beta.2.
  • No Essence of Araz: there is one in the ruin chest. Ruins built in beta.1 worlds get one added once, on load.

What Araz does not do yet

1.0.0-beta.2 is a beta. Single player is tested the most. Multiplayer works and gets harder with more players nearby, but it has had far fewer reports, so anything you hit on a server is genuinely useful to me. Part II, which opens the portal, is not out.

The mod page is at spicesfire.com/araz. Downloads are on Modrinth and CurseForge, and bug reports go to the Discord.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hide from Araz?

Yes. During a hunt, crouch, stay still and stay in the dark for three seconds and it loses sight of you. Hiding was added in 1.0.0-beta.2, and it stops working once the creature knows you well or when a Blood Moon is up.

Does a Totem of Undying work against Araz?

No. At the killing blow it takes the totem out of your hand, blackens it and shatters it in a locked-camera cinematic. The one exception is the Arazproof totem in the portal ruin chest, which it can neither steal nor break.

Where is the abandoned camp in Araz?

The coordinates arrive in chat right after the first sighting, in a message that starts "You noticed an abandoned camp far away". If you scrolled past it, type /araz help and the mod repeats your next step with the numbers.

How do I get an Essence of Araz?

There is one in the portal ruin chest, in the same chest as the last two Corrupted Records. Killing Araz also drops one, but it flees below half health until you are holding The Last Line.

Can I add Araz to a world I already play?

Yes. Nothing in the mod touches world generation. The abandoned camp and the portal ruin are built when you get close to them, so existing worlds and world generation mods are safe.

Which Minecraft versions does Araz support?

As of September 2026, release 1.0.0-beta.2 has builds for Minecraft 26.3, 26.1.2, 1.21.10 and 1.20.1. All of them are Fabric, and Fabric API plus GeckoLib are required. There is no Forge or NeoForge version.
